The English department believes that the study and practice of creative writing elevates the mind, opens new avenues to the understanding of literature and language, enlarges our capacity to understand and communicate, and integrates liberal learning.

Placements are arranged jointly by the Aand and the student, and although students do not always receive a salary, they are often paid a small bursary by their employer.

English literature graduates are ideally qualified for such professions as journalism, marketing, management, communications, publishing, the media industries, teaching, writing and arts administration.

You will graduate from Marylhurst with professional skills in critical thinking, writing, close ans, technology and english literature and creative writing — skills highly valued by graduate schools and prospective employers. Permission to move forward with transfer credit for an introductory course requirement option 1 above will require a review of the syllabus and work completed in the course by the creative writing faculty and is dependent on space availability, which cannot be guaranteed.

English graduates are in-demand and often enter professions or pursue graduate studies in fields such as writing, teaching, publishing, journalism, marketing, public relations, library science, government relations and business. The University has a set of procedures that govern the use of postgraduate research students in this way.

There are restrictions on RPL for some courses and fees may be payable for certain claims.

You have the opportunity to spend one semester or the full academic year on a study or work placement abroad.

Careers and employability A Masters degree in Modern Literature and Creative Writing is an excellent preparation for a wide range of careers. Balance the study of existing literature with developing your own writing skills across genres such as poetry, the novel, short fiction, drama and film. In Year 3 Level 6 , students take the Creative Writing Portfolio, studied in both semesters and worth 30 credits, plus the core module Literature and Society.

If you choose this route, you will take the creative modules 'Writing Fiction' and 'Poetry Writing and Contemporary Poetry' as your option modules.
